‘Wolf of Wall Street’ DVD peddlers get rounded up in Kenya

Film censors arrested at least 30 traders for selling banned copies of Martin Scorsese's profanity-laden, chock-full-of-sex film about crazed stockbrokers. The country's film board says it's too full of hedonism, sex, cursing and nudity.

Kenya Film Classification Board banned the Oscar-nominated film in January for its "extreme scenes of nudity, sex, debauchery, hedonism and cursing". Unfortunately, many Kenyans have already watched it on pirated copies sold in small DVD shops.

Twelve Years A Slave to hit Nairobi cinemas

Finally!!!! The highly-acclaimed film, 12 Years A Slave shall be officially screened on Kenyan soil on Friday 24 January at Century Cinemax, The Junction Mall.

The film, which tells the harrowing real life story of Solomon Northup, just scooped a Best Drama award at the Golden Globes and features our very own Lupita Nyong’o.

Directed by Steve McQueen, 12 Years A Slave has been hailed as one of the most important moments in film and world history with heartrending performances by Lupita and fellow cast members Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender and Brad Pitt. Crimson Multimedia is the team responsible for having the film brought home. Citing issues with South African distributors that caused them to miss the lucrative December window, MD Jayesh Patel was still looking forward to showing the film to a local audience.

Like all other films, 12 Years a Slave shall have a two-week run at Century Cinemax. However, Jay stated that it could be longer if demand for the film rose beyond that period.
